Mount Marapi, straddling Agam and Tanah Datar districts in West Sumatra, erupted on Friday night, signaling ongoing volcanic activity.

The eruption occurred at 10:36 p.m. local time and lasted for approximately 30 seconds, according to the Indonesian Center for Volcanology.

Seismographs at the Mount Marapi Observation Post recorded a maximum amplitude of 7.5 millimeters during the short-lived eruption.

Despite the event, ash columns were not visible due to thick cloud cover shrouding the mountain’s summit at the time.

PVMBG raises Mount Marapi’s alert status to Level II

The Geological Disaster Mitigation Agency (PVMBG) has elevated the alert level for Mount Marapi to Level II, or “Waspada,” meaning “alert.”

This designation reflects volcanic activity above normal levels, with potential danger to surrounding populations, officials say.

“Eruptions may not always produce high material ejections but are still dangerous,” said Ahmad Rifandi, a volcanology officer in Padang.

Residents are urged not to enter within three kilometers of the Verbeek Crater, the epicenter of recent volcanic activity.

Lahar Flows Pose Additional Threat During Heavy Rainfall Season

Beyond eruptions, authorities are warning of cold lahar flows—volcanic mudslides triggered by rainfall—that may endanger communities.

“Lahar flows can carry volcanic debris and destroy settlements along rivers,” Rifandi cautioned in a statement on Friday evening.

Communities living near rivers originating from Mount Marapi should remain vigilant, particularly during unpredictable nighttime weather.

PVMBG has emphasized the risks associated with sudden rain events that can trigger these fast-moving, destructive flows.

Ash Cloud Not Visible, But Health Riks Remain Significant

Even though the eruption produced no visible ash plume, PVMBG is advising residents to prepare for the possibility of ashfall.

Citizens living around the volcano are encouraged to wear protective face masks during and after eruptions to reduce health risks.

Volcanic ash can irritate the eyes and respiratory tract, especially for vulnerable groups such as children, the elderly, and those with asthma.

“Always keep a mask at home, as ash can fall without warning,” Rifandi advised.

All Hiking Trails and Summit Access Now Officially Closed

In light of increased activity, all climbing routes to Mount Marapi have been officially closed until further notice to ensure public safety.

PVMBG has instructed tourists, guides, and local farmers not to venture into the high-risk zones around the volcano’s summit.

“Recreational and agricultural activities in the danger zone carry significant risk,” Rifandi reiterated during the official briefing.

Tourism operators have been asked to suspend operations in affected areas until conditions stabilize.

Misinformation and Hoaxes Discouraged Amid Public Anxiety

Authorities have also stressed the importance of relying on verified information during times of elevated volcanic activity.

“Misinformation only increases panic and confusion in communities,” Rifandi said, urging the public to avoid circulating unverified claims.

PVMBG advises the use of official sources such as PVMBG and the National Disaster Mitigation Agency (BNPB) for updates.

Responsible information sharing is a vital part of risk reduction and community resilience during potential disasters.

Public Education and Rapid Response Needed for Local Safety

With Mount Marapi’s activity increasing, experts say quick response measures, including public education and emergency readiness, are essential.

Authorities are encouraged to intensify evacuation drills and volcanic hazard awareness campaigns across potentially affected zones.

Emergency logistics like face masks, flashlights, and clean water should be prepared in advance by local governments.

Residents are urged to stay informed via official channels and follow all PVMBG recommendations calmly and responsibly.

The better the public understands the risks posed by Mount Marapi, the greater the chance of minimizing casualties and damages.***
