Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto reaffirmed Indonesia’s long-standing support for a two-state solution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.
Speaking alongside French President Emmanuel Macron in Jakarta, Prabowo reiterated Indonesia’s stance that peace can only be achieved if Palestine gains full statehood.
Prabowo stressed that any recognition of Israel by Indonesia must be accompanied by formal acknowledgment of Palestine as a sovereign nation.
“Indonesia views the two-state solution as the only viable path to lasting peace,” Prabowo said during the joint press briefing at Merdeka Palace.
He also urged the Israeli military to immediately cease its operations in Gaza, echoing calls for peace voiced by Macron.
Indonesia insists on full sovereignty for a free Palestine
President Prabowo emphasized that recognition of Israel must go hand-in-hand with recognition of Palestinian statehood.
During his speech, he pointed to Indonesia’s consistent diplomatic position supporting the rights of Palestinians to self-determination.
“The independence of Palestine is the only road to a just and lasting peace,” Prabowo told the press.

PBNU urges multilateral efforts for decisive peace negotiations
K.H. Yahya Cholil Staquf, chairman of Nahdlatul Ulama (PBNU), welcomed President Prabowo’s statement as a reaffirmation of Indonesia’s principled diplomacy.
He described Prabowo’s condition for recognizing Israel—only after Palestine is officially recognized—as consistent with Indonesia’s historic position.

“This aligns with Indonesia’s endorsement of the two-state solution from the beginning,” Yahya said in a written statement from Jakarta.
Yahya emphasized that global consensus is now crucial to transforming political declarations into tangible international actions.
Urgency to protect civilians must guide international political action
Yahya highlighted the humanitarian cost of the ongoing war, particularly the loss of lives among children, women, and the elderly.
He stated that safeguarding civilians must become a shared moral and political responsibility among nations.
“Immediate steps must be taken to save thousands of lives from ongoing violence,” he urged.
Yahya called on the international community to respect and enforce previously agreed-upon resolutions related to the Israel-Palestine conflict.

France supports two-state solution and urges Israeli de-escalation
President Macron echoed Prabowo’s concerns during their joint address, reinforcing France’s commitment to Palestinian independence.
He stated that France is pushing for de-escalation and a return to negotiations toward peaceful coexistence.
Macron emphasized the importance of multilateralism in addressing this longstanding conflict and avoiding further humanitarian disasters.
France’s involvement could strengthen the push for consensus in European diplomatic circles, especially amid rising global calls for ceasefire.
France’s foreign policy shift is seen as a sign of growing frustration with Israel’s ongoing military actions in Gaza and the West Bank.
Indonesia’s foreign policy signals active global peacemaking role
Under Prabowo’s leadership, Indonesia appears increasingly vocal and engaged in international diplomacy, particularly on Middle East issues.
His remarks reflect a broader effort to position Indonesia as a mediator and advocate for peace in global conflicts.
The country’s clear stance on Palestinian statehood aligns it with many members of the Global South and Islamic world.
This diplomatic assertiveness marks a continuation of Indonesia’s foreign policy principle of active non-alignment and moral positioning.
Analysts see Prabowo’s engagement with France as strategic, leveraging Indonesia’s geopolitical weight in multilateral forums.
Global consensus needed to enforce existing peace resolutions
Yahya and Prabowo’s remarks underline the importance of reviving existing international resolutions regarding Palestine.
Numerous UN resolutions call for the establishment of a Palestinian state, but implementation has been elusive.
Calls for enforcement, rather than new declarations, are gaining traction as the death toll rises in Gaza.
“International society must consolidate around firm application of these agreements to all parties,” Yahya concluded.
Such a push would require collaboration between major powers, regional organizations, and civil society movements to restore credibility to multilateral processes.
Indonesia and France move diplomacy toward Palestinian recognition
As violence continues in Gaza, international actors are looking to middle powers like Indonesia to help reshape the dialogue.
With its strong Muslim-majority population and growing regional influence, Indonesia’s voice carries symbolic and diplomatic weight.
Support from countries like France may help open new diplomatic channels and reduce unilateral actions on the ground.
The next challenge is mobilizing a broader coalition of nations to implement a credible and enforceable peace framework.
Both Indonesia and France now appear committed to pursuing that goal in coming international forums.***
